Zigbee vs KNX vs Loxone: which smart home system fits your villa?

The short answer: choose Zigbee for a home you already live in, and KNX or Loxone for a new build or full renovation. All three can join Home Assistant for one app across every brand. The right choice depends on your wiring, not on which system is “best”.

Choose Zigbee if

  • You already live in the home and don't want walls opened.
  • You want to start with a few rooms and add more later.
  • You want the wall switch to stay the main control, with the app as an extra.

Choose KNX if

  • You are building a villa, office or commercial building and can run cable before finishing.
  • You want an open standard, so you are not tied to one brand or one installer.
  • Facility teams will maintain the building for years.
KNX (GVS) →

Choose Loxone if

  • You are building or fully renovating, and want one system to run lighting, blinds, climate and audio.
  • You prefer one brand with one app across the whole house.
  • You want the house to keep working without the internet; the Miniserver runs on site.

Can you mix them?

Yes, and many homes do. A common setup is KNX or Loxone in the main villa, Zigbee for an annex or a later extension, and Home Assistant on top so everything appears in one app with the cameras and intercom.
